Thiruvananthapuram Trip
During our visit to Thiruvananthapuram we visited the following places :
• Vettucaud Church – This church is also known as the Madre De Deus Church meaning Mother of God and is especially renowned among the pilgrims and tourists for the Feast of Christ the King celebration. Madre de Deus Church bears the tradition of more than 500 years.
• Vettucaud Beach – The beach which is located very near to Vettucaud Church.
• Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple – The Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple of Lord Vishnu located in Thiruvananthapuram. This historical temple, included in the major Vaishnava temples of India, is one of the many tourist places in Thiruvananthapuram. The Padmanabha Swamy Temple is an important place of worship for Vishnu-devotees.
• Kovalam Beach – An internationally renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. It has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s.
• Azhimala Shiva Temple – The Azhimala Shiva Temple in Vizhinjam is one of the most popular pilgrimage centers in Thiruvananthapuram. The temple is famous for the 58 feet high idol of Lord Shiva in the form of Gangadhareshwar, all made in concrete.
ABOUT THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Trivandrum, is the largest city and capital of the Indian state of Kerala. It is also the headquarters of Thiruvananthapuram district. Apart from the politics of Kerala, this is also the center of the educational system. Among the many educational institutions, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology are few of the famous names. This city, situated on the far south-west coast of the mainland of India, was termed by Mahatma Gandhi as the "Ever Green City of India". After forming the Travancore kingdom, Maharaja Marthanada Varma dedicated it to Lord Padmanabha, the presiding deity of Shri Padmanabhaswamy temple and named the city Trivandrum as 'Thiruvananthapuram'. The word 'Thiruvananthapuram' is derived from the Malayalam word thiru- anantha-puram, which means 'City of Lord Ananta'.
